| MARTIN'S QUICK BRIEFING: For more tips, alerts & awful puns, follow Martin on Twitter It's winter NOW. Switch energy to save £200+ The sun's shining, but switching takes 2mths, so in 'energy time' it's Nov In the world of energy switching, the cold snap is likely already here, as it takes 6-10 weeks for a change to happen once you've switched. So do it now and you'll be sure your energy is cheapest when the central heating's on full tilt. Here are the 10 things EVERYONE NEEDS TO KNOW about gas & elec bills... 1. | Don't think "there's no point switching they're all the same". As I'll prove below there are big differences both on price and service. So if you've been mistreated or pay too much, take them on by denying them your custom. | | | 2. | A price war means many can save £200/yr switching. Lots of companies are fighting to offer the cheapest 'fixed' deals and keep undercutting each other - though these only tend to be available for a short time. Better still, as standard prices are unchanged, and likely to remain so for the rest of the year, there's a level playing field, so you get a true comparison. What is a fix? It's where you're ensured no rate hikes for a set time (as opposed to variable tariffs where rates can rise). Obviously, the amount you'll be charged still depends on how much you use. TOP PICK FIXES INCLUDE - varies by region (typical use) Full top fix comparison to find YOUR actual price | | Fixed till | Early exit fee | Cost/yr | Service rating | Costly standard tariff (1) | - | - | £1,220 | - | Avg standard tariff (2) | - | - | £1,180 | - | Extra Energy cheapest fix | 31 Oct 15 | £50 | £991 | Unknown, new | First Utility* cheap short fix
| 31 Oct 15 | £60 | £992 | 40% great | New. (From Wed). EDF* fix longer, still cheap | 31 Mar 16 | None | £1,040 | 48% great | New. (From Wed). EDF Blue +* cheap long fix | 31 May 18 | None | £1,210 | 48% great | Source: MoneySupermarket. All monthly direct debit, dual fuel, unless stated. (1) British Gas, fixed price July 2017. (2) Across the big six. | - ALWAYS compare (and get £30 cashback): Your exact winner depends on usage & location. Our free Cheap Energy Club's Top Fixes Comparison shows YOUR exact prices, and often can give £30 cashback if it can switch you (for other cashback options see our guide), plus it then monitors your tariff to tell you when to switch again. - No exit penalties give certainty & flexibility. We favour no-exit penalty fixes so you can leave if other deals drop. But if a short fix with exit fees is so cheap savings easily cover the penalty (as above), it's not an issue.
- Fix long or short? Longer gives you certainty; shorter is likely to be cheaper (unless prices rise hugely) only if you're prepared to switch and switch again.
- Moving house? You can usually take a fix with you. Most fixes (incl those above) are portable, so if you move house you can take them with you. | | | 3. | There are HUGE differences in service - 82% great vs 71% poor. I get swamped by energy complaints, yet as our recent poll of 6,800 shows, service levels vary enormously. If you're not happy - switch. Poll results (service over last 6mths): providers with less than 100 votes excluded, see full result. 1. Ovo Energy: 82% great, 4% poor 2. Ebico: 81% great, 3% poor 3. EDF: 48% great, 16% poor 4. M&S Energy: 46% great, 13% poor 5. E.on: 43% great, 17% poor | 6. SSE (incl Atlantic): 42% great, 18% poor 7. First Utility: 40% great, 36% poor 8. British Gas: 35% great, 29% poor 9. Scottish Power: 18% great, 55% poor 10. Npower: 9% great, 71% poor | Our top picks comparison includes service so, for example, we show you how much you'd pay to go with the winner here - Ovo's best deal. | | | 4. | See if you're one of 3.5m owed £200 million. Many people are in credit when they switch energy supplier, but outrageously many firms operate a "don't ask, don't get it back" policy.
If you've switched in the last six years, it's time to ask for it back as your old supplier may've pocketed any credit you were due. Our Reclaim Energy Bill Credit guide shows how to check if you're owed and get money back.
"Yay! Got my weekly email and read about energy firms keeping your dosh. I switched from Npower in Dec, so had a quick check, a phone call later I had £215 back. Thanks MSE." - forumite Skaterdude | | | 5. | Electricity-only or Economy 7? You can still save. Those with no gas can still get all the tariffs above, just do an Electricity-Only Top Picks Comparison to find out which will save you the most. If you're on Economy 7 the decision can be more complicated - but savings are still there. Read our Economy 7 - Is It Worth It? guide. | | | 6. | On a prepayment meter? You can still switch and save. You're not locked to one provider. While the market's less competitive, some may be able to save £150/yr - do a check via our Energy Club Prepayment Comparison. It's also worth checking if you can move off prepay to a normal billed meter for free. Full help on this & more in our Cheap Prepaid Gas & Elec guide. | | | 7. | What's going to happen to prices? Most industry experts predict over the next five years, energy prices will rise a lot - some say by up to 50%. However, in the short term this is likely to be the first winter in five years without hikes. Of the big six, British Gas and EDF have both promised no hikes until the end of 2014, Npower till spring 2015 and SSE till start of 2016. Yet don't pick them for that - their standard prices cost more than cheap fixes, which ensures no hikes anyway. See full Will energy prices rise? news. | | | 8. | Paying by monthly direct debit gets you a £70 - £90/yr discount. Here your annual usage is estimated and divided by 12. Ensure you do regular meter readings to keep it accurate, or you could build up a debt, or be overpaying. See our Fair Energy Direct Debits guide.
Extra Tip: If you pay by direct debit, you should usually be in credit right now after the summer - as a rough rule of thumb, by no more than a month's bills worth. This will be used up by winter's higher usage. If you're too much in credit or in debt, you may need to get your direct debit altered. | | | 9. | Haggling with energy firms is usually a waste of time. It's not that they won't play ball. Often they will, telling you they'll put you on a cheaper deal, but there are a few big problems with this. - Energy tariffs don't have a simple price tag. They're a mix of standing charge and unit prices. So you've only got their word it's cheaper. - Ofgem rules mean they can't offer you a special deal - all tariffs need be available on comparisons (which like our Energy Club can also pay £30 switching cashback). So why haggle when you can do a check and find out definitively what tariff is cheapest for you? | | | 10. | Struggling to pay energy bills? Help may be available. If you're seriously behind, act now so you're in shape for higher winter bills. BG, EDF and Npower have trusts giving £100s in grants to help with energy guzzling items. See Energy Grants. Or call the not-for-profit Homeheat helpline (0800 33 66 99), which gives advice on grants, benefits & reduced tariffs. Also the Warm Home Discount worth £140/yr is given automatically to those on pension credit, though others can apply. | | More Energy Help: No Standing Charge Tariffs | Green Deal Mythbuster | Free Insulation | Is it better to keep the heat on all day? |

Urgent. Line rent & b'band £192 for a year (pay £15.40/mth) get £192 M&S vchs Fair to say deal-wise, we think this is THE BEST BROADBAND DEAL WE'VE EVER SEEN. But it ends Thu 11.59pm If you're on a standard BT, Sky, Virgin or TalkTalk package, you may pay £300+/yr for broadband & line rental (excl calls). This deal knocks those for six. We gave you a heads-up last week. Now it's live, here's the full rundown... - Ends Thu: £192 M&S vouchers on £192 line rent & broadband. MSE Blagged. This is for Sky newbies (or those who left it 12+ months ago) signing up to a 12-month contract. It's ONLY available via this special Sky line rent and broadband deal* link so PLEASE READ THE FULL INFO BELOW...
- Compulsory line rental. You pay £15.40/mth for 12 months - so £184.80 over the year. - Unlimited broadband (avail to 90% of UK). Up to 17Mb speed, this comes free with the line rent for 12mths. After that you're free to leave or pay £10/mth (£7.50/mth Sky TV users). - Compulsory Sky router: It's 'free' but you have to pay £6.95 to cover p&p. - Call costs: Weekend calls (up to 60 mins per call) to landlines included, other calls to UK phones match BT (see full call charges). Worth not if you rack up £100/mth in call charges, you'll be cut off until it's paid. - You get £192 of M&S vouchers (£100 by post, £92 emailed). This is sent as TWO DIFFERENT vouchers - both within 90 days of your phone line being activated. A £100 voucher will be sent by post from Sky, plus a £92 voucher emailed from Affiliate Window (the marketing agency that runs Sky's special web promo deal). Analysis: A year's line rent plus the £6.95 router p&p is £191.75 over the contract (excl calls). You then get £192 in M&S vouchers. If you'd spend that at M&S anyway, factor it in and you're effectively 25p UP over the year. Need a new line? Don't have one, or switching from cable or a non-BT line? Installation's £20 on top. Full info - Or pay £162/year for b'band & line rent, get £100 Amazon vch (good if you've already got Sky). HUGE 20mth 0% on new borrowing Halifax's is the first credit card EVER to offer 20mths interest-free spending - no-cost borrowing if used right. A typical credit card charges you around 20% APR for spending on it if you don't repay in full. This new card lets you do it interest-free for 20mths, effectively allowing you to spread the cost at no cost - done right, there's no cheaper borrowing. - Who's it good for? A 0% credit card can be both the best and the worst way to borrow, so take care...
- Good for: Planned purchases (eg, new sofa/to pay car ins) that's budgeted for and repayable in 20mths or less. - Bad for: Anyone using credit willy-nilly when they're a bit short (though if you'll do that anyway 0%'s best) OR those wanting to cut existing card debt costs; then, as above, go for a balance transfer card instead. - Longest 0% borrowing deal EVER. Halifax* advertises 20mths 0% on all spending. Yet it reserves the right to give up to 49% of accepted applicants just 16mths 0% spending - still strong, but beatable...

Question of the week Q: I've made three claims on my home insurance in the last three years and now my provider won't give me a quote for this year's renewal. What can I do to find affordable cover? Matt, via email. MSE Leigh’s A: Insurers are within their rights not to offer renewals to existing customers but your existing provider is often far from cheapest anyway, as insurers often reward new customers best. Even if you have a history of claims, you need to follow our usual cheap home insurance system to find cover - just because one insurer won't cover you doesn't mean others won't. If you are still struggling to find affordable cover, try a local broker who can try to find you a bespoke quote - look via the British Insurance Brokers' Association website. Please suggest a question of the week (we can't reply to individual emails). |
